Coconut oil has earned a loyal following among skincare enthusiasts, and for good reason. People value this oil for its powerful protective and moisturising properties and the rich saturated fats it contains, which is why it is one of the core ingredients we use in our skincare products here at SportSKN, namely the Coffee Face Scrub.

Traditionally pressed from raw coconuts or dried coconut kernels, it is loved not only for its skin benefits but also for its uses in haircare and cooking. Coconut oil is composed almost entirely of fatty acids, roughly 90% of which are saturated fats like lauric acid, myristic acid, caprylic acid, palmitic acid, capric acid, and more.

Below, we have outlined some of the main coconut oil benefits for the skin that research has highlighted over the years.

The Main Coconut Oil Skin Benefits

1. Soothes and Moisturises Dry Skin

Dryness is one of the most common skin complaints, and coconut oil is a natural way to tackle it. Its saturated fats form a protective layer that locks moisture into the skin, leaving it softer and more supple. Some research even suggests it may help soothe eczema and other dry, inflammatory conditions.

2. Protects Against Harmful Microorganisms

Many skin infections, from acne to athlete's foot, are triggered by bacteria or fungi. Coconut oil is made up of medium-chain fatty acids that carry antimicrobial properties, which is why research suggests it can help protect the skin against these harmful microorganisms.

The standout is lauric acid, which makes up around 49% of coconut oil. Of all the fatty acids tested, it was found to be the most effective at blocking bacterial growth. Capric acid, another medium-chain fatty acid, lends a hand in fighting microorganisms too.

3. May Help Treat Acne

Because coconut oil can help calm inflammation, it may also ease the redness and swelling associated with acne. Its antibacterial fatty acids could give breakouts an extra line of defence by targeting the bacteria involved. Keep in mind that results vary from person to person, and oily or acne-prone skin should approach coconut oil with more caution (more on that below).

4. May Help Soften Signs of Ageing

Free radicals and moisture loss both contribute to premature ageing. Because coconut oil is rich in saturated fats that help the skin maintain its moisture and enhance the skin’s barrier, it can help improve the elasticity and supple appearance of the skin.

This may in turn soften the appearance of fine lines, and therefore reduce signs of ageing. Coconut oil may also help defend against some of the environmental stressors that speed up visible ageing thanks to its antioxidant properties.

5. Possibly Aids in Mild Wound Healing

Several studies indicate that coconut oil may support the skin's natural wound-healing process while guarding against the microorganisms that can complicate recovery. Additionally, it may boost antioxidant levels, which can promote skin healing, and collagen levels, which can aid the repair and regeneration of skin. Researchers believe this is linked to the antimicrobial properties of lauric acid, which makes up around 50% of coconut oil.

That said, it is best reserved for minor, superficial irritation if anything. Avoid applying coconut oil to infected skin or severe wounds like deep cuts or serious burns. For those situations, always seek professional medical treatment straight away.

A Quick Note on Sensitivities

Coconut oil is generally safe for skin use, but it's always important to stay mindful as there are possible side effects that may occur. It was found that it may cause clogged pores, which can result in acne breakouts, as well as inflammatory acne such as blackheads and whiteheads. This is especially true for people who are prone to acne. Be sure to have a chat with your doctor or dermatologist before trying a new skincare product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is coconut oil good for acne-prone skin?

It depends on your skin. Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that may calm breakouts for some people, but it is also comedogenic, meaning it can clog pores. If you are acne-prone, patch test first and check in with a dermatologist.

Does coconut oil help reduce wrinkles?

While it is not a magic cure for ageing, research shows that coconut oil can help soften the appearance of fine lines. By deeply hydrating the skin and locking in moisture, it can give your complexion a plumper, more elastic, and more youthful look overall.

What does lauric acid do for skin?

Lauric acid makes up close to half of coconut oil and is its most powerful antimicrobial component, helping to fight the bacteria linked to common skin infections.
